RockCon Report Part 4 - Game 3 Battle Report: Iron Warriors Vs. Grey Knights

This game had me pitted against the Grey Knight opponent from Friday, Jedly.  I figured it'd be appropriate to play the same list but with Guard allies.  We decided to roll randomly for the mission.  We rolled up The Emperor's WIll, which used to be known as 'roll dice and tie' although now there are the typical secondary objectives as well.  It's one objective per side.  Then our deployment was Hammer And Anvil.

HQ -
Chaos Lord Morgoth - 2 lightning claws, veterans of the long war, combat familiar, meltabombs, sigil of corruption, mark of Khorne and gift of mutation.

Elites -
5 Chosen - 2 flamers, champion with gift of mutation and a combi-melta
in rhino with Havoc Launcher and Warpflame Gargoyles

Helbrute - missile launcher and twin-linked lascannon

Troops -
9 marines - flamer, missile launcher

Allied Imperial Guard:

HQ -
Company Command Squad with Lascannon

Troops -
Platoon Command Squad with Mortar

Infantry Squad A - missile launcher and flamer

Infantry Squad B - missile launcher and flamer

Heavy Support -
Basilisk Squadron with 2 basilisks

Jedly's Grey Knights were approximately:

HQ -
Brother-Captain

Elites -
Psyfleman Dreadnought

Psyfleman Dreadnought

Troops -
10 grey knights combat squaded in a razorback

10 grey knights combat squaded

6 Terminators

Heavy Support -
Dreadknight

Landraider

Fortification - Aegis with quad gun

Jedly won the roll off and deployed first and then went first.  I did not steal the initiative.

We also decided that the two large forest templates would be mysterious terrain as would the river.
The forest I deployed in happened to be a carnivorous jungle.  Every shooting phase I would roll a d3 and that many strength 5 ap - hits would hit my unit.

The river turned out to be Hyperslime.  Any unit in the river gets feel no pain but has to take a leadership test to exit the river.

I apologize in advance for the blurry pics.

First thing the Grey Knights did was shunt the Dreadknight to right in front of one of my squads in the woods.  His landraider then tries to move through the woods and throws a track, immobilizing itself!  He then uses his nasty flamer and kills 4 of my marines.

Next up he shoots his Psyfleman Dread at my rhino and blows it up.  First Blood goes to the Knights of Titan!

The Iron Warriors are pretty pissed at this point.  They decide that that monstrosity called a Dreadknight should have never been created.  The entire front line of the Iron Warriors opens fire and blasts it back to the Emperor.

Infantry Squad A all of a sudden loses a couple of members of its squad and they promptly run away!

The next turn the Grey Knights continue their fiure and blow up the predator, knock off a hull point from the Dreadnought and kill a few more marines.

Moving up with their rhino protecting them, the Grey Knights believe they have cover.

Then the squad in the woods fire and blow up their rhino.  And the Basilisks open fire lobbing huge shells into the Grey Knights behind the defense line, Obliterating a combat squad.

Morgoth is still content to stay in his rhino.  There are no targets worth his time at the moment.  The Infantry Squad continues to fall back.

The Basilisks continue their barrage almost wiping out another combat squad.  Infantry Squad B fires their missile launcher and blows off a gun from one of the Dreadnoughts.  The Brother-Captain decides its about time that he and his squad exit their Landraider.

Infantry Squad A regroups after Morgoth threatens to skin them alive if they don't get back in the fight.  The Iron Warrior's Dreadnought takes a critical hit and is wrecked.

The terminators fall over themselves trying to get back to the objective.

As the terminators move back.  Their power-armored brethren continue to advance eventually claiming the Linebreaker Secondary Objective.

At the end the Grey Knights pull off a win 5 - 3.  They had one objective, linebreaker, and first blood.  The Iron Warriors were only able to hold their own objective.

The land raider immobilizing itself in the woods was a huge deal in this game.  If it had been able to roll forward, I would have had terminators in my face the whole game.  His strategy was sound even though the landraider got immobilized.

I tried to shoot his army off the objective, which worked but because the termis were scoring he was able to move back and grab it anyways.

The basilisks were great in this game.  I took them again in the next game and the results were mixed I feel.  But you will see that in my next post.

until then
