The Overgrown Ruins Battle Report Part 2

Go here for Part 1:  http://apostlesofcontagion.blogspot.com/2021/07/the-overgrown-ruins.html

Continuing from the last post.  The Brainleaf Zombie that was Zeke Runner shambled into Duke Tuffnow.

Duke, being horrified by now zombified version of Zeke, quickly dispatches him with his Servo Claw.

Jo Buff opens fire on the Goliath leader, not seriously hurting him but instead making him just dive for cover next to his trusty Sump Croc.

A Goliath makes his way through the smoke to attack a zombie.

Slade Tuffnow fires his grenade launcher and then promptly runs out of ammo.  The Goliath's don't take any chances and throw a smoke grenade at him anyways.

The Goliaths continue their advance towards the Orlock's battle lines.

The Goliaths are having a lot of issues with the carnivorous plants.

Creed Freebork somehow escaped the Shadrack Spine-overgrown ruins with a loot crate and he is on his way to the opposite board edge.  He takes some fire along the way but continues his advance.

Another Brainleaf Zombie rises from a dead body.

Thadd backs up seeing the Goliath getting closer.  Unfortunately Jo Firber is pinned and the hired gun is seriously injured lying face down in the dirt.

The Goliath with the huge axe charges into the scum and slices him in half.

The Goliaths cluster together to make a final push.

Slade Tuffnow watches as a Goliath is pinned down by a Barbed Venomgorse.

More Zombies rise from the dead and spot a new target.

As the Goliaths advance Slade tries to get out of the way but gets knocked down by the Barbed Venomgorse.

Duke takes a hit and gets pinned.

The Zombies swarm Jo Buff.

The Goliaths continue to advance.

The Zombies roam the ruins in the center of the battlefield.

Creed Freebork made it off the opposite board edge and escaped with a loot crate.  The Goliaths got their entire gang off the board, except for the ones who went out of action.  The Orlocks didn't bottle.

In the end while the Goliaths won, the Orlocks made 162 credits and acquired a new Juve from their settlement.  They also lost the Juve, Red Groffnark.

The Goliaths escaped and acquired another ganger or two from their scavenging on their way back to their territory.

The rivalry between the two factions will only grow stronger from here on out.  Duke is out for revenge, and Angelica is off on her own quest to redeem herself in Duke's eyes.

I hope you enjoyed this battle report, it was one of my favorite games of Necromunda that I have ever played.

My next post will travel back in time 10,000 years to the Age of Heresy.  Until then.....

The Overgrown Ruins

A slurping sound greeted Jo Buff as he snuck around a corner of a ruins.  He heard the slurping sound to his right coming from what seemed like a large purple plant.  'It couldn't be the plant', thought Jo.  Carnivorous plants are just scary stories the juves told around the barrel fires in the dark of night to get a rise out of each other.

Jo had seen the Goliath ganger running down an alleyway carrying a loot crate and was sneaking around the corner of the ruins to get the jump on him.  The slurping sound surprised Jo but there were many strange sights and sounds in the Underhive.  As Jo stepped into the alleyway and raised his gun he heard screaming from above him.

Looking up, Jo saw the juve Red suspended in the air by a tentacle coming from the purple plant, and then several things happened all at once.  A hail of purple spikes shot out from the center of the plant instantly killing Red and splattering blood for several meters in all directions, the Goliath trotted into view only to let out a howl and be instantly decapitated by a long blade of purple razor grass and Jo looked down only to see a long purple spine sticking out of his chest.  Jo dropped to his knees and he knew no more.

As the lights flickered in the alleyway, three prone twitching bodies slowly rose to their feet and began shambling towards the nearby firefight.

The Overgrown Ruins is a scenario I came up with which takes place in an area of the Hive between the Sump Sea and the Goliath's zone of influence.  The Overgrown Ruins is an ancient area of the Hive where old buildings are crumbling and overgrown with all manor of deadly and carnivorous flora.

The Goliaths had rescued their fellow ganger in the previous fight but now they were pursued by Duke Tuffnow and the Iron Dogs.  The Orlock leader was angry at Angelica, his cousin and had sent her and her gang off to a distant area of the Hive and told her not to come back unless she had somehow made up the lost profits a captive would have generated.

Duke decided to take matters into his own hands and made sure the Goliaths would pay for their incursion into his zone.  He laid a trap for the Goliaths in a deadly area of the Hive where few dared to go.

Below is the mission I came up with.  We didn't modify the carnivorous lpant rules as I had suggested on page one and we also used our entire crews instead of only 10 models.  Feel free, of course to try out this scenario and let me know in the comments how it went.

The Goliaths had been using the Scavenging rules from the Dark Uprising rulebook because they were stuck in my Orlock's Zone and were essentially outlaws there so they couldn't really go to my Trading Post because they would be spotted and attacked.  Since they were using the scavenging rules they actually acquired a few new gangers.

The Goliath Gang outnumbered my Orlocks by a few models but my Orlocks were very experienced so I didn't think it would be a big deal.

Going into this mission I knew it would be a difficult fight because of the amount of dangerous terrain and also because of the number of Goliaths.  Never underestimate how difficult it can be to take down 10+ toughness 4 dudes.  Its just difficult to roll enough wounding rolls when you almost always need to roll 5+.

Lets get right to the battle report.

First up are some pictures of the battlefield.

Now the battle begins.

Red Groffnark gets knocked down by a Shadrack Spine plant on his first activation.
This would be a recurring theme for this mission.

Jo Buff warily advances along the side of the ruins while Don Rockson lines up a shot with his Heavy Stubber, Bo Tuffnow takes cover behind a pipe and the hired gun, Hive Scum, moves closer to the ever-dangerous Grapple Weed.

Duke Tuffnow and his trusty cyber-mastiff, Bork advance next to a pipe while Slade Tuffnow lines up an anti-plant grenade shot at the nearby Shadrack Spine plant.

Jo Firber covers the Champion Thadd Dustbow with his Bolter as Thadd advances.  The hired gun Hive Scum moves closer to the Shadrack Spine plant as a diversion.

The juve Creed Freebork spots a loot crate in the ruins and bravely moves to grab it, even though it is sitting right next to a Shadrack Spine plant.

The Goliaths advance through a ruins.

The Goliath's leader moves into a heavily foliated area with his Sump Croc.

Zeke Runner gets knocked cold by a Shadrack Spine.

Shortly after he goes down he rises back up as a Brainleaf Zombie!

The Grapple Weed attacks a large group of Goliaths.

Don Rockson gets Violent-Minded and moves, aims, and then fires his heavy stubber into the Goliaths forcing them to go to ground.

The Goliaths cover the battlefield in smoke grenades to help shield their advance from the incoming fire of the Orlocks.

This was probably the longest game of Necromunda I ever played.  It was near 4 hours long and this post is getting kind of long so I will continue the battle report in the next post.

Until then...

The Big Bar Brawl and a Rescue Mission

A few weeks ago the new map campaign kicked off with a Big Bar Brawl.  The Big Bar Brawl mission is in the House Of Iron book.  It expands on the smaller scope of the Bar Brawl mission which was in a White Dwarf supplement from a few years ago.

The Big Bar Brawl mission modifies the basic game structure by changing the phases of the game; there is a Drinking Phase followed by a Fighting Phase followed by the End Phase.  We also only allowed four fighters from each gang because we played a 4 player game and didn't want the game to drag out for multiple hours, which is possible if we used the whole gangs in the mission instead of just 4.

I took Rad, Angelica, Bull and Krak to the Red Robin Bar.

We played on a small 2' x 2' table.  The Red-Arsed Monkeys (Goliaths) got hosed by both The House of Xtravaganza (Escher) and the Chaos Cult gang while the Iron Angels (my Orlock gang) picked and chose their fights eventually being the last gang standing and having taken no real lasting damage.  Also by the end of the game, the Iron Angels had taken a Goliath captive.

Coming out of the Big Bar Brawl feeling very good about themselves, Angelica and crew prepared for the Goliaths to come and try to rescue their komrad.  The Goliath captive was taken and being held in the Iron Angel's 3-story prison complex in the Sump Sea zone which is controlled by Angelica's cousin, Duke Tuffnow.

The Sump Sea sector has many industrial, living quarters, and ruins set upon large rockcrete slabs which sit on the surface of the Sump Sea.  The slabs are held up not only by immense columns sunk into the sea floor but also horizontally by rebar-supported rockcrete beams and joists.  This makes the Sump Sea area similar the Old Earth's Venice.  One of the main differences between Venice and the Sump Sea is that the Sump Sea is much deadlier.  A fall into the Sump Sea could easily mean death for an unfortunate Hiver.

The Sump Sea sector.

The mission was Rescue.  The Orlocks set the Goliath prisoner in the second floor of their prison tower and set 5 ganger sentries to patrol the perimeter of the area.

The captive.

Sentry #1: Xak Frakker

Sentry #2: Zeb MacAfee

Sentry #3: Fill Maroney

Sentry #4: Krak Frakker

Sentry #5: Val Valentino

Val Valentino isn't aware of the danger he is in.  The Goliath leader and his Sump Croc pet have snuck into position to take out Val.

Val Valentino is about to get ambushed.

A Goliath ganger eyeing Fill Maroney from behind a wall.

The rest of the Goliaths move into position and begin to sneak around, trying to be as quiet as possible.

Krak Frakker randomly saunters down a corridor and spots a Goliath.

Krak fires on the Goliath and unfortunately doesn't do much.  Krak then sets off the alarm and all of the Orlocks now realize they are in trouble.

Knowing Krak is in trouble, he retreats down a corridor, hoping he can escape the Goliaths.

The Orlock reserves start to show up but unfortunately a great number of them show up in awkward places unable to assist in the battle at all.

Angelica and Bull apparently took a wrong turn....

Fio Tuffnow arrives and starts up her jump pack engines ready for a big jump.

Val does his best to avoid the monster of a Goliath and his pet Croc but he just can't, and he goes down.

Fill Maroney fires his Combat Shotgun and a hail of scattershot bowls over a Goliath.

One of the Goliath's tries to block future shots from Fill by throwing a smoke
grenade but the smoke cloud drifts back on top of him.

Fill Maroney gets charged by a Goliath ganger and he holds his ground.
He is joined shortly there after by Fio with her jump pack.

Fio has 3 attacks, hitting on 3s.  She rolls 1's.  I had a lot of rolls like this in this game.

Krak Frakker goes down to a massive axe-wielding Goliath.

At this point, two gangers were out-of-action and a third was facedown with a serious injury.  Four of the Orlock reserves were in a spot where they couldn't contribute to the battle.  The Goliath captive had even busted his bonds and escaped!  At this point Angelica had had enough, she called off the gang and voluntarily bottled and the Iron Angels retreated out of the area.

Val Valentino recovered from his wounds and will be back in the next fight.  Krak Frakker had to go to the Doc but was patched up for 90 credits.  Krak was worth only 80 credits but he had 3 experience points so it was worth it to get him fixed up.  Fio who was the seriously injured ganger recovered just fine.

After going to the Doc to get Krak fixed up Angelica went to the Trading Post to purchase an Armored Undersuit.  Her save goes up to 4+.  The other upgrade I want to get as soon as possible is the Suspensors for Rad Gruffhouse's Heavy Bolter.

The fact that the Goliaths came into Orlock territory and rescued one of their own didn't sit well with Duke Tuffnow.  He was angered that these uncouth beasts could just waltz into his territory and take what was rightfully his cousin's prize.  The money the captive could have been worth to the guilders was significant and the loss of that income bothered Duke.

The Red-Arsed Monkeys had to be stopped.  They would not be allowed to leave The Tuffnow's Territory "Zone 1" without paying a price.

Duke began formulating a plan that revolved around the Ruins, a Beastman, and enough autogun rounds to make a screen door out of a bulkhead.

The plan revealed, next time.....
