Chaos Codex Review Part 3

I want to start off this post with some observations on some of the more interesting rules in the codex.  Some things I've noticed that I may want to focus on in my lists and some things that I think you may be seeing a lot of from this codex.

Veterans of the Long War - This rule is pretty cool.  HQs and a lot of the other choices in the codex can purchase this or come automatically with it.  It gives the unit Hatred (Space Marines) and +1 leadership.  The reroll that hatred gives you could be key at certain times when you HAVE to win that one combat.  Not every army you will fight against will be Space Marines, but a lot will.  The +1 leadership is pretty cool and puts your basic Chaos Marine squad back up the the leadership level they were at in the previous two codexes.

Warpflame Gargoyles - This cheap upgrade for vehicles gives the guns soul blaze.  Soul Blaze puts a marker next to a unit you wound and that unit on the next turn on a 4+ takes another hit.  This upgrade can really amplify the damage potential on things like predators.  I am going to try this on as many vehicles as I can.

The Burning Brand of Skalathrax - This is an AP3 torrent flamer that is a Chaos Artefact.  This means that HQ choices can take it.  Put this on a Warpsmith and throw him with a squad of chosen with flamers and you will be able to eliminate most units(probably not death stars).

Gift of Mutation - Gives you a roll on the Chaos Boon chart for your character before the game starts, ignoring the spawn and daemon prince result for a small amount of points.  Its not as nice as the Daemonic Gifts that were in the 3.5 codex when you could just pay points and upgrade your guy with +1 attack or something but it is a nice bonus for a character anyways.

The Warsmith goes in the rhino with the chosen.  The other 2 marine squads with rhinos stay in their rhinos and shoot as does the warsmith's rhino.  The rhinos then react to whatever threat gets too close.  Its a shooty list that wants to keep the enemy at arm's length.

The Terminators start outside of the landraider to shoot.  The Lord goes with the cultists.  Again a shooty list but this time there is some hand to hand punch if needed.

There are so many combinations and things to try in this codex, I have only just barely scratched the surface.

I am sure there will be more posts in the future with more army lists.

  1. Great reviews, would love to hear how you think the choice of wargear for characters has increased / decreased.

    Good thing about those preds becoming cheaper!

    I'd like to hear a batrep on how the above army does.

  2. Thanks! I think I will make my next post about the wargear choices then, since you asked.

    I will take pics tonight then and do up a bat rep. Its going to be 2 chaos armies going at it and knowing my opponent, he will have a VERY different army then I do. Should be plenty of new units to showcase tonight.
